Succeed with your digital interview

With today's media development, much has changed in the recruitment process. One example of this is the rise of digital interviews, which have become more common as a result of the pandemic. This new form of conversation also requires us to communicate in a different way compared to the previous face-to-face interviews. With these tips, you will gain valuable building blocks for a successful digital video interview.

Make a striking first impression

One of the most important things to remember during a digital interview is to make a strong and clear first impression. Spend time introducing yourself and who you are, while also giving physical impressions through gestures and smiling. It is especially important to showcase your personality when you cannot see each other in person.

Pay attention to your surroundings

Before entering your video meeting, check around and see what will be visible in your camera. Try to sit in a room with a neutral background where there is no risk of distractions. Make sure you are clearly visible on the screen. If light comes from behind you, you will not be seen as well, so try to sit in neutral lighting where the person you are speaking with can see more than just a silhouette of you. Sound is also important when it comes to your environment. Ensure that you don't have an open window with distracting noise or other people in the same room.

Place the camera correctly

It’s easy to accidentally place the camera at an odd angle or askew. This is actually very central to making a good overall impression. It is important that your face is clearly visible, so a direct front-facing angle is a good idea. Think eye level, and it will surely look great!

Consider your body language

Something else that is important in a digital interview is being mindful of your body language. Even though you're sitting behind a screen, you shouldn’t fidget too much. Make sure, for example, that you're not spinning around in your chair, but sitting up straight and stable. This will also give the impression that you are not nervous but confident in yourself. Eye contact with the camera is also important during a digital interview, even if it feels strange to stare into a screen. This is to make you appear more present.

Practice a few times

If you feel nervous about the new format, you can always practice a few times before starting the interview to get more comfortable. A good tip is to record yourself a few times, then review the video to spot any areas for improvement with sound and lighting. You will also be able to see how you sound and whether you're maintaining eye contact with the camera or not.
